ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sophie Linden is a contemporary artist from Farmington Hills, Michigan. Her work encompasses a body of acrylic, oil and watercolor paintings, linoleum and intaglio prints, as well as ink pen drawings. She is a recent graduate from the University of Michigan’s Stamps School of Art and Design, where she achieved her BFA and a Minor in Art History. In the winter of 2020 Sophie also spent two months studying at SACI in Florence, Italy. Having graduated in the spring of 2021, Sophie moved back home to Farmington Hills to continue expanding her portfolio, inspired by all of her years growing up spending time exploring the outdoors.
Her passion for nature inspires her to explore the realm of the natural world through art, bringing attention to the beauty of details that exist at every scale. Humans tell their stories with art through colors and shapes. We connect with mark making, relating to familiar gestures of anger and frustration. We find solace in our relationships with color, a relationship that stems from being in tune with the world around us. We create to communicate our experiences and the occurrences that shape us into who we are. Sophie believes that the Earth does the same; telling stories of life, of chaos, of change through the patterns and designs discovered in the world around us. There is a natural order that is overlooked by many, hidden in the formations of plants and animals that populate the planet, as well as in the rock and soil beneath our feet. She understands that we all are a part of something bigger, a network of coexisting parts. That our attraction to beauty stems from our appreciation for our surroundings, belonging to a planet that lives and breathes as one connected system.
